WORKSHOP: Cripping Music Culture Through Access Riders

This is an introductory-level English-language workshop designed for both artists and promoters who are interested in learning more about access culture and its intersections with music. Its aim is to introduce participants to accessible music technology, musical environments, and music culture. This workshop will engage participants in a discussion exploring the multi-sensory nature of sound from a Crip perspective—that sound is not only auditory, but is a tactile, visual, colourful, and emotional material. We will specifically learn how to create and read an access rider since this is a tangible way to promote Crip participation in music events. Access riders outline an artist’s access needs and allow promoters to ensure they have equal access to participating in and shaping music culture. Participants will leave with a personalized access rider in hand or with the knowledge needed to read one and to support someone who provides access riders.

Hexagram-UQAM room: The room SB-4105 is located on the 4th floor of the Pavillon des Sciences Biologiques at UQAM (141, avenue du Président-Kennedy). The entrance to the building is on the southwest corner facing Kimberley Street and is wheelchair accessible. The elevators are located on the left as you enter. The nearest metro station is Place-des-Arts which has a ramp. Accessible toilets are available at the entrance of the room.
