KEYNOTE: Doing It Yourself – Elevating Marginalized Communities in Electronic Music

Two years ago, as protests spread across the country following the murder of George Floyd, the music industry promised to change. Major record labels, streaming platforms, and broadcasters pledged hundreds of millions of dollars in charitable donations as the lack of diversity came under scrutiny. Although some progress has been made since, marginalized voices still barely have a seat at the table, which is especially problematic in a field that has systematically disadvantaged minorities for decades. In this keynote, Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson assesses the state of inclusion and accessibility in electronic music and considers how to further develop meaningful and sustainable strategies for elevating marginalized communities. Hutchinson will draw on her experience as a community-maker and the founder of Dweller festival, which platforms Black artists and serves as a site for writings from a Black perspective. Hutchinson is also the co-founder of Discwoman, an agency focused on representing and promoting two men and non-binary DJ and producer talent.
