CONVERSATION: Beyond Matter – Producing, Curating, and Mediating Art in Virtual Spaces

This conversation uses Beyond Matter—an international, collaborative, practice-based research project led by ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe as its starting point. The initiative takes cultural heritage and contemporary art to the verge of VR and reflects on the increasingly virtual state of art production and mediation. Alongside Véronique Paradis, Chief Innovation Officer at Montréal’s Society for Arts and Technology, ZKM’s Scientific Associate Felix Koberstein will address the online revival and archiving of exhibitions and the delivery of real-time artistic experiences through the use of virtual reality tools. Touching upon topics such as experimentations with non-linear storytelling approaches and the intertwining of digital and physical solutions, they will discuss how the art experience can be migrated to digital realms and hybrid spaces. They will also address the underlying questions of curatorial authorship, mediation, and accessibility and what they imply for the future of exhibitions and cultural immersive experiences.
